Certificates of Appreciation

A Peace Building and Development study conducted in Nugal region of Puntland by Puntland State Universty (PSU) recognized and appreciated the role of traditional leaders and activists in community peace building and development. They have dedicated their time, resources and their souls to the well being of their communication. In a celebratory ceremony hosted by PSU, these traditional leaders and activists were awarded Certificates of Appreciation by PSU as well as the Puntland ‎Vice‬ ‎President‬, ‪‎Abdihakim Abdullahi Omar Amey‬ and the Puntland Minister of Education, Abshir Aw Yusuf Cise and other senior cabinet officials. The traditional leaders (ISIM’s) were awarded for their Active role in conflict resolution, peace building and leadership. The awarded ISIM’s were: – Islan Isse Islaan Mohamed islan Muse, – Sulan‬ Said Mohamed Garase and – Suldan Abdullahi haji Nur (Arabdur). The university and ministers also awarded Warsame Abdullahi Diriye for his active role and courage in peace building and conflict resolution in the community. Well-known activist Abdiraxman Abdulle Osman (Shuke), former Director of the Peace&Development Research Center, was awarded for his active role in contributing to good governance in Puntland. Lastly, the university awarded Mohamed Yusuf Tigey for his voluntary work in promoting the natural beauty and resources of Puntland. The award ceremony showcased these recipients’ contribution to society and serves to further motivate and encourage them to continue their valuable work. As PSU Vice Chancellor Mahamud Hamid Mohamed stated during the ceremony, the university plans to expand the award beyond Nugal province to include the other provinces of Puntland. Puntland State University wants to send the message that everyone who stands up and plays important role in the social development of their community will be recognized and rewarded for their effort, as Allah will award them with paradise in the hereafter. World Health Day 2016 commemorated at PSU

GAROWE, 7 April 2016– The Public Health Students Association, commemorated the World Health Day at the Puntland State University (PSU), with theme of “Beat diabetes”. The commemoration ceremony focused on ways to halt the rise of diabetes worldwide. The Puntland State University students presented the “Key findings from WHO’s “Global report on diabetes” and Global commitments to reduce diabetes. The Puntland State University (PSU) vice chancellor Mohamud Sh. Hamud appreciated the Public Health Student Association for their active role to promoting Public Health. He encouraged students to make such awareness presentation in the different locations in Garowe and also other districts in the country. Mr. Hamud promised he would personally support this awareness to spread the message. Mr Abdullahi Ali Jama the Director of the Higher Education of the Puntland Ministry of Education and Higher Education appreciated this commemoration and thanked PSU specially Public Health Student and Officially Closed the ceremony. Arts and Culture Revival Program: Closing Ceremony

A colorful and highly organized event was held at PSU main Campus central ground to end the district art and culture exhibition, talent search and media outreach events that have been conducted by PSU. The event was attended by winners from the four districts, district education officers, PSU senior management-Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice chancellors, Minister, Ministry of Information, Communication, Culture and Heritage and the Director General of the Ministry, Intergovernmental Academy of Somali Language representatives, and diplomats, religious leaders, representatives from the local universities, attendees from the community at large and the list is long. A word of Prayer Sheikh Mohamed Omar started the ceremony with a word of prayer and summoned all the congregation to Allah’s piety. The Program Coordinator Mr. Abdirisack Farah, the project coordinator addressed the participants and gave a briefing remarks on the accomplishments of the project so far as well the objectives and the intended impact of the project. He said, “This project was spearheaded by the Ministry of Information, Communication culture and heritage and PSU is facilitating the implementation” He added, “The ownership is for all Puntland people” He expressed that the project objectives are to promote and enhance youth creativity and talent. The Program has been implemented in four districts of Puntland-namely-Garowe,Galkayo, Gardo and Bosaso. He said, “It has been after a long competition that we have today the winners from the four districts”. He added, “We have 24 person from the four districts” He said that the school did a school based competition and 50 students competed where 10 were finalists who made to the district art and culture exhibition and finally at the district art and culture exhibition the best student from each school was selected and that is why they are here after a long way. Speaking about the young talents the coordinator said, “There is a lot of potential among the youth- both in school and out of school” He added, “They have come with arts that could take some days with recognized painters” “There are many opportunities and the ministry is committed to continue the program and the youth who are brought here at least have the opportunity to network and enhance their skills in arts and poetry” said the project coordinator as he ended the speech. Halgan Cultural Team Self-organized cultural team entertained the participants with a short drama that made all the participants glued to the platform and kept them laughing from the start to the end. The drama had several themes about Somali marriage, Somali life style and the Somali language. The play significantly addressed how art and culture are powerful tools to sooth and builds human relations, mobilize communities, change the consciousness and perceptions of people. The play also capture how naming of market places in foreign language is abusing the Somali language and the actors encouraged their counterparts to use Somali naming system for their premises. PSU Vice Chancellor Mohamud Sheikh Hamud, Vice Chancellor of Puntland State University thanked all the participants and he particularly acknowledged the efforts of the young contestants.  He said, “What you performed at your district was marvelous and you have all the potential and deserve a credit for your efforts” He had been very optimistic about the future of Somali art and culture and he said, “We hope you can represent us at regional and national level and we are proud of you” Local Universities Representatives Mr. Abdurrahman Ibrahim, from East Africa University gave a thanksgiving remarks on behalf of the local universities, Mr. Abdurahman briefly emphasized how considerate it is to revive art and culture and empower young persons. He said,“ This is a very crucial project in revving art and culture” “The organizers, the participants, the donor and the government deserve a credit for this wonderful work” added Mr. Abdurahman. Former Good Governance State Minister. Mr. Gaashaan, former state minister addressed the participants and was amazed how the event was organized. He said, “The young talented actors have entertained and made us laugh” He said that he had been in art and culture festival held at Bosaso with the Somali author and poet-Ahmed Farah Ali (Idajaa) who shared with him that the Somali treasure is not lost since he met with young talented persons. DG: Ministery of Information, Communication, Culture and Heritage the Director General Mr. Abukar Abkey gave very brief remarks. He mentioned that the program was spearheaded by the ministry with the support of USAID through DIA-TIS. He said, “The program was owned by Puntland with the support of USAID” For protocol purpose the DG welcomed the Minister for his official remarks, present award to the winners and close the ceremony. The Minister of Puntland Ministery of Information, Communication, Culture and Heritage Mahamud Hassan Soadde The Minister of Information, Communication, Culture and Heritage acknowledged and thanked every individual and institution for their role in participating the event and for their attendance to mark the closing ceremony. He said, “On behalf of the ministry and Puntland government I congratulate the organizers for this amazing and wonderful ceremony” The minister mentioned how they are grateful to DIA-TIS and USAID. He said, “DIA-TIS and USAID deserve applause for support this iniative” Today we are here to mark the end of the program and the aim was to revive and enhance art and culture revival in Somalia”. The minister said, “When we talk of art and culture- The first thing is your language-That equates your existence” “We Somalis we don’t give priority to painting but it is one of the arts that is powerful to address human being”. Award Presentation As all speeches and drama concluded, The Minister, The DG, the PSU Vice Chancellor and Other officials presented award to the winners and also awarded recognitio n certificates to lead individuals of this program. The award package comprised of cash, a recognition certificate and a gift.

Puntland Culture and Art Revival Launched at PSU

A highly organized launching ceremony was conducted in Garowe on 23rd February 2016 at PSU Multipurpose hall to launch the art and culture revival school based art competition. The event was attended by distinguished guests from the ministry of information, communication, culture and heritage, DIA-TIS project team, PSU management and Project team, juries, contesters from five schools-four secondary and one primary. Abdirisack Farah, PSU Art and Culture revival coordinator gave introductory briefings to the guest of honors and the participants. He stated that the program is a multi component with a large scope extending to 20 schools and Public Talents in four districts in Puntland namely- Garowe, Galkio, Gardo and Bosaso. He said “We hope we will get from this art and culture exhibition a talented young person’s to be proud off.” Mohaumd Hamud Mohamed, PSU Vice chancellor gave a welcoming and a word of encouragement to the people of Puntland at large and most particularly to the contesters from the different schools. In his remarks he said, “Somalis have a very rich art and culture.” He added, “It is rare to find on spot poems and exchange of ideas through poems in other cultures besides Somalia” The vice chancellor was very opmtismic about the young generation and he said, “Our culture is our sign of existence lets strive to protect it” The vice chancellor was very grateful to the ministries, DIA-TIS USAID for their role and support in reviving art and culture in Somalia. He said “We, PSU are only facilitators- The Program is for the government with the financial support of USAID. The end result will be high level of interaction among the youth from the four districts, reduced youth related violence. Addressing the youth he said, “We hope you will be courageous and outstanding but ensure discipline and utmost ethics as you interact” Mustafe, from DIA thanked the distinguished guests, the implementing team and the participants from the different schools. Mustafe emphasized that the issue of art and culture is a high stake priority and the most important project the organization is implementing. He said, “This is one of most significant project we are implementing with our partners” He added, “Art and culture revival is about accelerating the Somali civilization” He expressed that the aim of the project being to educate young people about their culture and promote self reliance and reduce social problems associated with youth idleness. Mohamed Sh. Hassan (Hukun) Chairman of the Intergovernmental Academy of Somali Language Putland Office and also a member of the jury team and a Somali historian and poet gave a word of encouragement and thanks giving to all the stakeholders. He was very grateful to PSU for their previous accomplishment he said, “PSU did a great job in art and culture revival for the previous two years” He said, “Somalis are very eloquent and creative and we should be proud of our culture and language” He thanked DIA-TIS for enlightening art and culture. He said, “This organization (referring to DIA) is very wonderful” and he added “There is no such alike.” The Director General of the Ministry of Information, Communication, Culture and Heritage-Puntland state of Somalia gave a word of remark during the launching ceremony event. The Director emphasized how committed the ministry is in reviving art and culture and he said, “ During last year annual cultural, we pledged that we will continue our struggle to revive art and culture and this is the product” He said, “The only difference between us (Somalis) and other Muslim countries is our art and culture and we should uphold it” The minister, Ministry of Information, Communication, Culture and Heritage-Puntland State of Somalia- Hon- Mahamud Hassan so-adde  gave brief statement on general issues and a word of encouragement and thanksgiving. The ministry was very delighted with young contestants and he said, “I am very delighted and really excited” and “ I wish I could be among you wearing the school dress.” In a word of encouragement to the students and the youth the minister expressed that the only way our life can prosper is through education. He said, “If you want to lead a good life, lead your community and develop your people the only solution is Education” He expressed that Somalis are very powerful artist giving an example of a four year old Somali girl in the Diaspora winning an award in arts. He said, “A young girl of four won an art award in one of the art contestant in Europe” He encourage the contestants and said, “It is good to test your skills and your potential as it paves way for a future career” The Minister Officially Launched the program.

International Mother Language Commemoration – Feb 21, 2016

In colorful event intended to commemorate International Mother Language Day has been jointly organized by the Puntland Ministry of Information, Puntland State University and Intergovernmental Academy of Somali Language held today in Garowe, PSU Main Campus, the theme of the event was “Support your Mother Tongue,” in Somali ” U Hiili Afkaaga” Key Puntland Ministers including Education Minister, Director General of the ministry of Information, Deputy Minister of Women Development and family Affairs, media, academia, writers and civil society attended this commemoration event. In his opening remarks to mark the occasion, PSU Vice Chancellor, Mohamud Hamid Mohamed welcomed honorable guests invited to the occasion. Also, he featured the importance to advance the use of the mother language. The vice Chancellor stated the tangible contribution of PSU in developing the culture and Language and mentioned that PSU has a co- curriculum cultural activities that the University Students are supposed to perform with in each academic year, Finally the Vice Chancellor publicized officially The establishment of the Faculty of Journalism and Somali Studies. The dean of the Faculty of journalism and Somali Studies Mr Said M. Shidad emphasized the intervention of his faculty to the Somali heritage in general and also Somali Laguage specifically, he mentioned that his faculty will Primary establishment/building: The Somali culture museum. Scientific Terminology Committee (Terminology Translators) Oral talk, History & Litrature Archive (Dying Library Documentation) Writers and other high level academians delivered speech on this occasion and recounted the main important of this day on mother language. Education Minister Dr. AbshirYusuf Isse addressed to the audience the contemporary challenges which faces Somali Language, the minister used several Somali words showing that Somali Language is enriched with history, culture and heritage and recounted how it is to be proud of mother language and use it effectively, the minister declared that his Ministry will give further prominence to Somali language. Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. 21st February of every year is a worldwide annual observance for marking International Mother Language Day since 1999 when it was officially announced by UNESCO.

PSU Garowe ends the 1st semester exams in the academic year of 2015/2016.

Puntland State University (PSU) Garowe Main Campus has successfully ended the first semester examination in the academic year of 2015/2016. The University administration stated that the results would be announced on 25 January 2015. Students will have a one month break from studies before the commencement of the second semester on 1 February 2015. The vice chancellor of PSU Mohamud Sh. Hamud sent a warm congratulatory remarks to all students who successfully completed the first semester and urged them to focus and work hard for betterment of their future.

PSU Culture and Innovation Week 2015

The Culture & Innovations week; was held its 2nd year at Puntland State University Garowe Main Campus, The main activities of the program took place between 28th November – 5th December 2015. The event was comprised mainly in Three categories: Individual Skill and competences Presentation. Memorizing the Holy Quran and the Hadith Competition Conducting Research & Studies Competition Somali literature and Poems competition Marathon Competition Groups Cultural Presentation and The groups built a complete Somali traditional hut/shelter known as (Aqal Soomaali) and equipping it with all the traditional materials in terms of clothing, food, traditional entertainments & games, camel, goats, poems and dramas as well. Faculties Innovation Presentation & Football tournament The Puntland Vice President and the PSU Vice Chancellor officially launched the ceremony and attended by the University students, guests from other universities and educational institutions, international & local agencies, government officials, traditional and religious elders and attendees from different parts of the community. This wonderful and colorful ceremony was together organized by PSU and the Student Union (PSUSDA), and was decorated the ceremony venue all the forms of the Somali traditional decorations. This event is one of the co- curriculum activities that the University Students are supposed to perform with in each academic year.

PSU Students Development Association(PSUSDA) election 2015/2016

PSU Students Development Association(PSUSDA) election has been officially opened on scheduled time, Thursday afternoon November 05, 2015. Deans of all the Faculties, Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor of PSU, Puntland Minister of Education and Higher Education, State Minister of the Puntland Ministry of Health, Directot General of the Ministery of Information, and other Government Officials were present at the election. PSU Garowe main Campus students have been voting to elect the students who will lead PSU Student Development Association (PSUSDA) over the next year. After weeks of campaigning and candidate forums, students at Puntland State University Garowe Campus have elected Osman Abdullahi Ali who was one of 3 candidates as the ChairPerson of PSUSDA during 2015/2016 academic year. It is PSU responsibility to facilitate these elections through the regulation of candidates, planning of events, and administration of voting platforms. PSU is incredibly proud of the amount of students that voted! and would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote and all the candidates who have spent time, speaking to students and encouraging them to get involved in their Union. During Elections, eligible students put themselves forward for nomination and run as candidates, and student members’ vote for their preferred candidate to win. The winning candidate form the chairperson of the Student Union Executive Committee, who are there to represent the views of students to the University and wider community, and ensure the Union operates according to its policies, procedures and strategy.

New Students Orientation (NSO) has been held at Puntland State University Garowe Campus on Tuesday September 29, 2015. The primary goal of the NSO is an activity for students to help with a successful transition from high school to the University, to explore their new environment, access important resources, meet current students, staff, faculty and establish connections with other new students. 2015/2016 Entrance Examination

Puntland State University held 2015/2016 University Entrance Exam as scheduled on Saturday September 26, 2015. Hundreds of newly students graduated from secondary schools sat for the entrance exam at PSU Garowe main campus for the academic year 2015/2016 . This exam is a common practice and it is a prerequisite for entrance into PSU and it is mainly required on undergraduate level admission. The most common form for an entrance exam is a written test, even if the candidate school certificates are up to the required standards, it may not be granted a study placement if the candidate score less than adequately in his/her entrance examination. The final student selections can be quite competitive and entrance exam plays major role in the selection process. The entrance exam for the second batch of candidates has been scheduled on Monday September 25th 2014.
