Puntland State University 2015 commencement Ceremony

Puntland State University Held Successful commencement On March 30, 2015 at Puntland State University’s main campus in Garowe0 which began at 8:00am local time. The ceremony was attended by Puntland President Abdiwali Mohamed Ali Gas accompanied by Ministry of Education and Higher Education and senior Cabinet officials, Representatives from UN Agencies and International NGOs, Business People, Parents, University Deans, Lecturers and 105 undergraduates. The master of ceremony called Sheikh Mohamed Omar Ahmed to open the ceremony with word of prayer. Various speeches were made that pointed out to the importance of the knowledge, Among the highlights of the ceremony was a speech by the Vice Chancellor of Puntland State University Mr Mohamud Hamid Mohamed, he gave a warm greeting to the crowd and congratulation for the graduates.The Vice Chancellor briefed the historical evolution of Puntland State University, also he mentioned that 70% of the graduates are already employed which shows their quality and quality of knowledge and skills they received, the vice Chancellor briefed the relationship that the university created with many international educational institutions in the world. And concluded his speech with many thanks to all invited that showed up for the wonderful graduation ceremony and best wishes to the graduates for their future endeavors. Others who addressed the congregation were Sheikh Said Ahmed Farah (One of the Graduating male student), Laila Abdiaziz Mahamud (one of the female graduating Students), Mohamed Sh. Hassan (one of the Parents), Ahmed Isse on behalf of the secondary schools, Said Hassan Shire Amal bank Representative, Mr Abdullahi Isse ow Ahmed Nugal Region Governor, The Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Puntland Mr Ali Haji Warsame. Thereafter, Puntland President Dr Abdiwali Mohamed Ali Gas was invited to address the crowd including the graduates. The president gave congratulation to the graduates and encouraged them to continue their career, also the president thanks to PSU family as hall, finally the president awarded the student their Degree Certificate. Also Awards were presented to PSU Faculty Deans, Commencement ceremony organizers and even Puntland President, Ministry of Education & Higher Education and the PSU Vice Chancellor. After the colorful ceremony the graduands, family members and other participants had photo group with the president and concluded the crowd. Puntland State University Commencement is the formal university-wide celebration at which mostly Puntland President officially confers degrees upon graduating students. The ceremony features a processional of graduates and faculty, remarks from the President, and a vibrant keynote speakers. PSU Staff Review Meeting (Theme: “Even the Sky is Not Limit)

On 7th of February, 2015 PSU campuses staff had a review meeting at PSU Main Campus -Garowe. The meeting in which the PSU Vice Chancellor, representatives of the three campuses, deans, professors, lecturer & heads of all the different departments attended was chaired by the PSU DVC of Academics. The meeting lasted three days from 7th through 9th February, 2015 The meeting was officially opened by the PSU Vice Chancellor, Mohamud Sh. Hamid Mohamed, he welcomed warmly all the participants who had made time and travelled to attend the meeting. During the meeting, there were presentations of PSU Campuses Annual Reports for 2014-2015, Annual Academic Plans for 2015-2016, the Annual Budgets for 2015-2016, and strategies for reducing the campus costs as well as a new strategy for the harmonization of the campuses. Also there were Validations of the updated Human Resource Policy, Research Center Policy and the Financial Policy Manual In general, the meeting went well. The Vice Chancellor appreciated and thanked all the members for their active participation and presentations during the meeting. Finally, the Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and the HR Director awarded Four members of the staff for their hard work, commitment & their tireless efforts during the past year: Terah Nyaanga: Director of Postgraduate Studies and Research Centre  Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed: Academic Registrar  Abdifatah Ahmed Abbas: Dean, Faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology  Awil Mohamed Osman: Director of the Production Unit.

Web 2.0 and Social Media Tools Training for SomaliREN Member Universities Staff

Puntland State University (PSU) hosted a five day training from Monday February 2nd to Friday February 6th 2015. The participants included ICT and adminstrative officials from Puntland State University, East Africa University, Lasanod University and Galkayo University. CTA (Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Co-operation) www.cta.int in conjunction with TCC organized the Training, Participants where introduced web 2.0 applications including social media and got a chance to see what others have done, get hands-on experience on how to use innovative applications, and assess how they could adopt these innovations within the context of their work and organization. This Opportunity covered advanced online searching, getting information served via alerts and RSS, collaborating remotely, online mapping and social networking. What is Web 2.0 All about? Technological innovation is taking place at a breath-taking pace. Simple, open source internet-based applications and services designed to enhance on-line collaboration are now available to the wider public at little or no cost at all. These online technologies known as Web 2.0 and Social Media applications enable people to collaborate to create, share and publish information.

Legal Training and Curricula Development Expert

Summary of the assignment: The selected candidate will be required to balance direct support with transfer of skills and knowledge to the staff and the students of the Puntland State University – Faculty of Shari’a and Law. Capacity-development is a key component of this assignment and it will be taken in high consideration in evaluating the achievement of the outcomes of the assignment. The most important tasks of the assignment include: redesign the strategic framework of the Faculty; review the curriculum of the Faculty; provide training and guidance to the PSU Legal Clinic personnel and the students of the Faculty; provide trainings on legal writing and research; establish affiliations of the PSU Faculty of Shari’a and Law with regional and global schools of law; and support the Puntland Women Lawyers Association (PUWLA) by providing trainings and strengthening its members’ legal skills. In all matters related to the assignment, the diaspora expert will report to the Dean of the Faculty of Shari’a and Law, who is the nominated Supervisor for the institution, and the IOM/MIDA project officer in Garowe. About the Puntland State University and its Faculty of Shari’a and Law: Puntland State University (PSU) has its roots entrenched from the patriotic and humanitarian joint efforts of KAALO Relief and Development Agency (local NGO) and Diakonia of Sweden that has been instrumental in providing the much needed financial support, physical structures and equipment. The PSU was established in 2004 as an evolution of the former Garowe Professional School and Puntland Community Colleage. The PSU has its main campus in Garowe and two branches in Galkaio and Bossaso. In response to the urgent need for legal education in Puntland and in conjunction with the overall policy of the government of Puntland in strengthening the judiciary system, the Puntland State University (PSU) and the UNDP Access to Justice Program cooperated in establishing the first Faculty of Law in Puntland in October 2008. Since then, the PSU Faculty of Shari’a and Law has been making every effort to deliver educational service leading to providing graduates possessing all the knowledge, skills and values necessary for practicing the legal profession at a level comparable to graduates of prestigious law schools in the Region. About MIDA: Migration for Development in Africa (MIDA) is a capacity-development Programme, which assists to mobilize competencies acquired by African nationals abroad for the benefit of their countries of origin. MIDA seeks to convert brain-drain across Africa, after the loss of educated and talented individuals, into brain-gain through brain-circulation and transfer of skills and knowledge. In Somalia, IOM/MIDA has been working with Somali authorities in all three regions to build the capacities of their institutions since 2008 in Somaliland and Puntland and since 2009 in South Central Somalia. ‘Strengthening Institutions through Diaspora Assistance’ (MIDA-Sweden) is a component of IOM Somalia’s MIDA Programme whose overall objective is to contribute to the on-going process of stabilization and state-building of Somalia by developing the capacities of key government institutions through the mobilization of Somali diaspora resources. After carefully looking at the priorities of the Somalia and Somaliland Governments, MIDA-Sweden targets three key sectors, namely: Health, Public Finance Management (PFM), and Justice. To make sure the next generation of Somalis is involved in the development of Somalia, IOM will also pair Somali young graduates from Somali universities with the diaspora subject matter experts. The Somali youth will be placed at internship positions at the relevant institutions. On 12th of November 2014, PSU celebrated the Association of African Universities day 2014, under the commemoration theme of “How can African Universities Enhance Capacity for job Creatation”, The event was held at the university main Campus Hall in Garowe, The Vice President of Puntland A number of ministers, government officials and representatives from international agencies based in Garowe, attended the ceremony . The ceremony was opened by the PSU Vice Chancellor, Mohamud Hamud Mohamed with remarks marking the occasion and the importance of the AAU as a representative forum for all African higher education issues in Africa . He also informed the participants on AAU goals for Higher Education, notably, to facilitate the attainment and positioning of HEIs as strategic assets in tackling socio-economic challenges in the continent. Finnaly, The Vice President of Puntland Abdiakim Omar Amay also gave special thanks to the vice chancellor who was one of the founders of Puntland State University for his effort, patience and hardworking. also appreciated all AAU Member Universities.

Puntland State University Students Development Organisation election 2014/2015

PSU Students Development Organization (PSUSDA) election has been officially opened on scheduled time, Wednesday afternoon October 22, 2014. Deans of all the Faculties,Vice Chancellor, Deputy Vice Chancellor of PSU, Puntland Minister of Women Development and Family Affairs (MOWDAFA), Puntland Minister of Justice, Religious Affairs and Rehabilitation (MOJRAR), State Minister of the Puntland Ministry of Health, State Minister of the Puntland Ministry of Interior, Local Government & Rural Development, Director General of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and other Government Officials were present at the election Held at PSU Multipurpose Hall. PSU students have been voting to elect the students who will lead PSU Student Development Organization (PSUSDA) over the next year. After weeks of campaigning and candidate forums, students at the Puntland State University have elected Abdikarin Mohamed Nur who was one of 3 candidates as the ChairPerson of PSU Students Student Organization during 2014/2015 academic year. It is PSU responsibility to facilitate these elections through the regulation of candidates, planning of events, and administration of voting platforms. PSU is incredibly proud of the amount of students that voted! and would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote and all the candidates who have spent time, speaking to students and encouraging them to get involved in their Union. it was 10:20pm evening, when the event has been officially closed by the Director General of the Puntland Ministry of Education and the Higher Education Ahmed Abdi Ali (Kayse)

Congratulations to our newly admitted students!

New Students Orientation (NSO) has been held at Puntland State University Garowe Campus conference Hall on Saturday September 27, 2014. The primary goal of the NSO is an activity for students to help with a successful transition from high school to the University, to explore their new environment, access important resources, meet current students, staff, faculty and establish connections with other new students. Classes will start on Wednesday October 01, 2014. 2014/2015 Entrance examination

Puntland State University held 2014/2015 University Entrance Exam as scheduled on Monday September 22, 2014. Hundreds of newly students graduated from secondary schools sat for the entrance exam for the academic year 2014/2015. The examination was held in the Garowe main campus. This exam is a common practice and it is a prerequisite for entrance into PSU and it is mainly required on undergraduate level admission. The most common form for an entrance exam is a written test, even if the candidate school certificates are up to the required standards, it may not be granted a study placement if the candidate score less than adequately in his/her entrance examination. The final student selections can be quite competitive and entrance exam plays major role in the selection process. The entrance exam for the second batch of candidates has been scheduled on Thursday September 25th 2014.

PSU Ranked First Best among Somali Universities

Puntland State University has remarkably improved its global ranking, moving 310 positions up to be placed 6262 out of 21, 500 ranked higher education institutions globally by Webometrics. In the quarter ending June 30, 2014 rankings, PSU was ranked 1st out of 23 Universities in Somalia, 67 out of 726 Universities in Sab-Sahara Africa, 124 out of 1,306 Universities in Africa and 6262 out of 21,500 Universities in the world. PSU’s latest performance can be attributed to increased number of publications by the university academic community, resulting in enhanced knowledge transfer. The University has also recently increased the number of sub-sites as well as rich text uploads which saw its web presence to be ranked 4104 globally. To do even better, PSU is currently implementing an ambitious online visibility enhancement strategy, that will see more resources and information availed on its website, The Ranking Web of Webometrics is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions and is aimed at promoting academic web presence and supporting the Open Access initiatives for increasing significantly the transfer of scientific and cultural knowledge generated by the university to the whole society.

Puntland State University Alumni Association 1st Meeting has been held at Puntland State University

PSU Alumni Association held its first meeting on May 19, 2014. Its ongoing purpose has been to communicate alumni concerns and ideas to the university, present and approve the Charter of the Alumni Association and elect the BoD of the Association. During this occasion it has been presented, discussed and approved the Charter also it has been elected the Board of directors of the Association. PSU Alumni Association is as an organization that encourages the alumni to continue to carry out the mission of PSU, also to reconnect alumni with campus life so that they, in turn, can encourage current students in their future. The mission of the Alumni Association of the Puntland State University is to foster a mutually beneficial relationship between the University and its alumni … to perpetuate a sense of pride in and commitment to the outstanding qualities of the University and the education it provides, and to promote, in partnership, a positive image of the University and its alumni through communication, service and leadership.
