PSU Convocation Ceremony 2014

Puntland State University (PSU)  organized its sixth convocation ceremony, a total of 119 undergraduate degrees  awarded. The ceremony was attended by Puntland President Abdiwali Mohamed Ali Gaas accompanied by  the Minster of Education Ali Haji Warsame and Minister of Justice Ismail Mohamed Warsame, senior Cabinet officials, Representatives from UN Agencies and International NGOs, Business People, Parents, University Deans, Lecturers and 119 graduates Various speeches were made that pointed out to the importance of the knowledge Among the highlights of the ceremony was a speech by the Vice Chancellor of Puntland State University Mr Mohamud Hamid Mohamed, he gave a warm greeting to the crowd and congratulation for the graduates. Speaking on behalf of Puntland State University I hope that your educational experience at Puntland State University has led you to know yourself better and that you have developed a passion for lifelong learning. For it is only through that passion that you will continue to learn, question and analyze – all hallmarks of an individual who is especially equipped to contribute to the social and economic well-being of their communities and the world. i want to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your successful accomplishments. All of us at Puntland State University look forward to celebrating with you this wonderful occasion. The Vice Chancellor mentioned something about the historical evolution of Puntland State University and the challenges it faced since its foundation, the vice Chancellor briefed the global outlook of Puntland State University and its academic collaborations with select foreign universities, which provide for joint research and curriculum development as well as faculty and student exchanges and many other educational institutions. Others who addressed the congregation were the Minister of Education Ali Haji Warsame, Minister of Justice Ismail Mohamed Warsame,  GOLIS Representative  also addressed the congregation Thereafter, Puntland President Proff. Abdiwali Mohamed Ali Gaas was invited to address the crowd, the president gave congratulation to the graduates and PSU family as hall, I congratulate the parents and guardians who made enormous sacrifices to support and encourage their wards through these years. I think the Vice Chancellor, Faculty members and staff for ensuring a high academic standard at all times I urge the graduating students never to forget the sacrifices made by their parents and guardians. Now is the time to pay back the debt. also the president gave special thanks to the vice chancellor who was one of the founders of Puntland State University for his effort, patience and hardworking. The president mentioned the importance of knowledge; the establishment of this University and government plan towards the development of the education and educated youth, finally the president awarded the student their certificates and encouraged them to contribute to the social and economic well-being of their communities and the world.. The graduating students were with enthusiasm and excitement about the new possibilities feeling of empowerment, ready to go out and take on new challenges and achieve new success.

PSU Library Recieved 4,000 Referrence Books

On Tuesday February 06, 2014, Puntland State University (PSU), Received 4,000 Reference books donated by AARAN Organisation based in Austrellia. The function was attended by PSU Deputy Vice Chancellor Mr Burhan Adan Omar, Finance Officer Mr Ahmed Abshir jama, Chief Library Abdisamad Duale Adan, and PSU students. In his opening remarks, Mr Burhan expressed the University administration’s appreciation for the assistance by AARAN Organization, noting that the these reference books will Help the student and university lecturers. Also Mr Ahmed Abshir Jama Thanked to the Aaran Organization for contribution to the Puntland education sector and the Somali community in general. He said education is a reproductive investment that would benefit community in every possible manner for generations. Farah Abdulkadir Dirie from AARAN Organization reminded those in attendance that this donation is the first but its not the last donation, He also thanked PSU for playing a leading role in the education and social reconstruction of the community. PSU chief Library Mr Abdisamad Duale Adan, thanked to the AARAN Organization for their donation with the assurance that the university will ensure that the books are optimally utilized to benefit learners and Lecturers.

Legal Aid Clinic Center Lunched

The launch ceremony of Legal Aid Clinic held at PSU Hall, Garowe on November, 2013. It was participated by many guests including Minister of Justice, Attorney General, State Minister of Security, representatives from ministry of women, police officers, MPs, IDPs, refugees, traditional elders, religious leaders, UNDP, UNSOM, PSU President, Academic staff, Director of Legal Aid Centre, Students and staff of Legal Clinic. As the first legal aid clinic in Puntland, the establishment of legal  aid clinic is milestone in the legal aid and legal educational history of Puntland. It is expected to improve and broad the legal education fourth year law students through legal clinic education and to increase the access to justice for vulnerable and economically deprived groups such as IDPs, refugees, juvenile offenders, women, etc, through provision of free legal aid assistance and representation by legal Clinic. Mr. Mohamud Shiekh Hamud, PSU Preseident welcomed warmly the guests with the introduction of the importance of legal aid clinic. He thanked UNDP for the support to PSU faculty of Shariah and Law. Mr. Burhan A Omar, Legal Aid Clinic Director and dean faculty of law has highlighted the purpose of legal clinic and legal services will be provided by Legal Clinic, the targeted and beneficiary groups. Then,  Yusuf Haji Nur, Director of Legal Aid Centre, Ms. Wanza from UNDP, Mr. Ahmed Sulaiman from UNSOM, Mr. Mohamud, the attorney General have delivered their remarks in the occasion regarding the importance of  establishment of legal aid clinic. Mr. Khalif Haji Hassan, Puntland Minister of Justice has concluded officially the ceremony and he has appreciated for the initiative and the efforts of PSU faculty of law to produce such qualified and professional lawyers and judges into Puntland judiciary system.

PSU celebrated 2013 African University Day

On 12th of November 2013, Puntland State University (PSU) celebrated the Association of African Universities day, under the commemoration theme of “Changing Higher Education Landscape in Africa: Highlighting Success Stories”. The event was held at the university main Campus Hall in Garowe, Puntland Somalia. A number of ministers, government officials and representatives from international agencies based in Garowe, attended the ceremony . The ceremony was opened by the PSU Vice Chancellor, Mohamud Hamud Mohamed with remarks marking the occasion and the importance of the AAU as a representative forum for all  African higher education issues in Africa . He also informed the participants on AAU goals for Higher Education, notably, to facilitate the attainment and positioning of HEIs as strategic assets in tackling   socio-economic challenges in the continent.

ACCA exams held at Puntland State University

ACCA exams was held on Monday at examination center of Puntland State University in Garowe. 25 students sit the 8th examinations of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is the world largest accountancy body with around 300,000 students. PSU management has congratulated students, parents and lecturers on this profound opportunity for students ‘career enhancement. Mr. Mohamud Hamud , PSU president expressed as “an honour” for PSU staff and student that Puntland State University hosts an International examination . The implementation of the ACCA exams in Puntland was facilitated by United Nations Development Program.  Students from the governement institutions and private sector where the first beneficiaries. Students at PSU have completed second last ACCA exams which has been continuing for the last three years. Osman Mohamud Ali, an ACCA instructor has fully explained and appreciated on how this program is implemented. He said Association of Chartered Certified Accountants is the world largest accountancy body in around 180 countries. He said that getting an international certification is a outstanding opportunity for Puntland students that would enable them to be Chartered Certified Accountants and particularly their Financial and managerial capabilities. “I am very happy to see that Puntland is accredited as one of ACCA providers in the world. Puntland has got a great opportunity facilitated by UNDP ” said Osman. He said this was the 8th part of ACCA examination, and only one exam is remaining then students would receive and International Certificate. ACCA paper-based exams are held twice a year, in June and December. ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is the global body for professional accountants. ACCA offer business-relevant, first-choice qualifications to people of application, ability and ambition around the world who seek a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and management.

Graduation Ceremony of Law Faculty

PSU Faculty of Law organized the graduation ceremony for the first batch of law graduates on Wednesday 20th February 2013 at PSU Hall. It was the first lawyer graduation ceremony in Puntland, as it was one of the most exciting events for the PSU and Puntland Judiciary as law graduates received their law bachelor degree and acknowledged publicly for their achievements. The ceremony was attended among others by Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice, Minister of Justice, and Deputy Minister of Education, Director of PDRC, and UNDP Head of Sub-Office Garowe and other participants from civil society and Students. Mr. Mohamud Hamud, PSU President, welcomed the honorable, worthy guests and participants and opened the ceremony officially. Then, Dean Faculty of Law gave introductory speech on background of the faculty highlighting the role of Puntland Ministry of justice and UNDP in the establishment of the law faculty. Some of the special guests gave remarks of encouragement and congratulations to the law graduates. Finally the Punltand Speaker of Parliament presented awards and degrees to the merit position holders: Also Awards were presented to PSU Law Faculty and UNDP. After the colorful ceremony the graduands, family members and other participants had photo group and concluded the crowd.

Puntland State University Students Union election 2012/2013

PSU Students Union election has been officially opened on scheduled time, Tuesday afternoon October 23, 2012. Deans of all the Faculties,Vice Chancelor, Deputy Vice Chancelor of PSU and other members were present at the election Held at PSU Multipurpose Hall. PSU students have been voting to elect the students who will lead PSU Student Union over the next year. After weeks of campaigning and candidate forums, students at the Puntland State University have elected Abdirahman Gelle Dirie who was one of 5 candidates as the ChairPerson of PSU Students Union during 2012/2013 academic year. It is PSU responsibility to facilitate these elections through the regulation of candidates, planning of events, and administration of voting platforms. PSU is incredibly proud of the amount of students that voted! and would like to thank everyone who took the time to vote and all the candidates who have spent time, speaking to students and encouraging them to get involved in their Union it was 8:45pm evening, when the event has been officially closed by the PSU Vice Chancellor Mahamoud Hamid Mohamed.

Statistics and Demography Training Launching Ceremony

This Statistics and Demography Training Programme was to the skills of those working in Puntland to improve the capacity of these institutions in the collection and analysis of data needed for taking informed decisions regarding service delivery. The number of professionals participating in this training was 20 trainees from different government departments and institutions working in the areas of planning and collection of statistical data. The funding of the project was provided by UNFPA and it was implemented by Puntland State University (PSU) in partnership with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation (MOPIC). After UNFPA approved the funding of the project, our first step towards a successful training programme was to start the selection process of the trainees. We met with MOPIC about the selection criteria for participating in this very important training. Then, after agreeing on the selection criteria, MOPIC started contacting other ministries and government institutions to assign trainees in accordance with the agreed criteria. Then, the selected trainees sat for an entry exam prepared by the University. This exam would make sure that the right trainees were taken for the training and this would maximize the benefits that can be gained from the training. This process was completed in good time and all the trainees were ready to start their training on time. The training programme was launched on 6th September 2012 in Puntland and was officially opened by Faisal Said, the Director General of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation (MOPIC). Also Abdinasir Mohamed from UNFPA, attended on behalf of the funding partner. On the other hand, PSU was represented by Abdulkadir Omar, the Dean for the Faculty of Business and Economics as all trainees were present in this event. The Director General of MOPIC, Mr. Faisal Said was the first speaker in the launching event and he emphasised in his speech the benefits of this type of training programmes for improving the capacity of Puntland government institutions to deliver services needed to the public through upgrading of the skills of its staff in data collection. Also, he urged trainees to benefit as much as possible from this opportunity. On the other hand, Mr. Abdinasir Mohamed, raised how UNFPA is taking part in the institution building of Puntland government institutions by funding capacity building programmes similar to this training. On the part of PSU, the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics thanked UNFPA for funding this project and MOPIC for the selection of suitable trainees for the training. Also, he promised to make this training a success in all aspects.

Official farewell ceremony for Puntland State University students who are going to pursuit master studies in Turkey

PSU organized farewell party for 5 Turkish scholarship recipients graduated from the university who will pursue their master studies in Turkish universities. The ceremony was held at New Rays hotel conference hall and saw the participation of PSU deans, lecturers, vice chancellor a, deputy vice chancellor, university council and government officials including vice minister of education, together with representatives from TIKA Turkish International Cooperation Agency. Meanwhile PSU vice chancellor Mahmud Hamud Mohamed opened the party with welcoming words and he especially appreciated Turkish scholarship support which will never be forgotten and will be branded in the minds of the Somalis. The deputy vice chancellor Salim Said Salim also appreciated Turkish scholarship and underlined those Turkish Somali relations is historical dating back to the 16th century when Ottoman Empire supported the well known Somali Hero Ahmed Gurey during his holy war against the Ethiopian Christians. The Puntland vice Minister of Education from his side congratulated students and hoped for brighter future, as he thanked Turkish government for their valuable support and requested for more similar support in the field of education. From his side, TIKA coordinator in Somalia Abdi Ahad congratulated students and hoped them to take happy time in Turkia and he urged them to focus on their education and do their best to become agents of change in their country after their graduation.

Appreciation Ceremony for the Turkish Government Donation

On Tuesday August 28, 2012, Puntland State University (PSU), conducted a handover ceremony in appreciation of the donation of the Turkish Government of forty computers (40) and seven printers (7). The function was attended by the Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Eng. Mohamud Salah and the Puntland President advisor on women and family affairs, Mrs Hawo Abdi Kure, among other government dignitaries, local community leaders, PSU staff and students. In his opening remarks, Mr Mohamed Hamid Mohamed, the PSU President, expressed the University administration’s appreciation for the continued assistance by the Turkish Government, noting that the computers and printers had come soon after the Government of Turkey had offered scholarships for masters and PhD degrees for PSU graduates and faculty. Highlighting the extent to which the Turkish government was assisting the Somali community through education, he said that the donation was part of a larger lot of three hundred and sixty computers (360) and sixty three (63) printers donated to Somali universities through SomaliREN and that the nine universities under the SomaliREN umbrella were all beneficiaries of the masters and PhD degree scholarships by Turkey. In his address to the congregation, Eng Mohamud Salah, thanked the Government of Turkey for contribution to the Puntland education sector and the Somali community in general. He said education was a reproductive investment that would benefit community in every possible manner for generations. He also thanked PSU for playing a leading role in the education and social reconstruction of the community and urged the university to expand its faculties to include courses in agriculture. The minister also reminded those in attendance that besides the unparalleled contribution to the Puntland Constitution through the hosting of debates, PSU had also hosted the successful Garowe I and II Somalia Federal Constitution Consultative conferences which saw the adoption of a new constitution for the Somali Republic. He pointed out that it was an interesting coincidence that as PSU celebrated the donations and assistance by the Turkish government, the Somali Federal Parliament in Mogadishu had just finished electing a new speaker barely an hour earlier on the same day on the basis of the constitution PSU helped found. Mr Salim Said Salim, the PSU Deputy Vice Chancellor, thanked the Turkish government for the donation with the assurance that the university will ensure the computers and printers are optimally utilized to benefit learners.
