International Humanitarian Law Workshop held at Puntland State University (PSU)

On 10 June 2015: A workshop on International Humanitarian Law organized by International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) in collaboration with Puntland State University (PSU) was held at the PSU conference hall here in Garowe.

Puntland State University (PSU) Vice Chancellor Mohamud Sh. Hamud and the Head of ICRC Somalia Omar Odeh had officially kicked of the workshop.

Mr. Hamud thanked ICRC for organizing such an important workshop for the Law students and teachers. He emphasized and urged participants to grasp the knowledge received during the workshop.

The goal of the workshop was to provide Law students, Lecturers and select professionals with an overview of the historical development of IHL, key IHL concepts, the relationship between IHL and international human rights law, the rules that apply to non-international armed conflicts, prisoners of war, protection of non-combatants and related issues. Including conflict classification, protected persons, the regulation of means and methods of warfare, enforcement of IHL and more.

The workshop was led by Prof Umesh Kadam Regional Legal Advisor from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC),

During the Workshop two teams of the students presented IHL moot court competition drama,

Prof Umesh Kadam commented the students Presentation and told that PSU Law Students will participate the IHL moot court competition in Arusha in the next two years.

At the end of the workshop PSU awarded a certificate of appreciation to ICRC for its invaluable partnership and support to PSU.

PSU Deputy Vice-chancellor also the Dean of the Faculty of Law Burhan Adan Omar officially closed the workshop.
